Established in 1960 by Archie Bleyer, the Candid label achieved its legendary status with its vintage catalogue thanks to the vision of producer Nat Hentoff who, in the span of some eight months, managed to encapsulate a microcosm of the New York jazz scene at that time. The catalogue includes classics like the Max Roach Freedom Now Suite album, classic sets by legends such as Charles Mingus, Cecil Taylor, Abbey Lincoln, Coleman Hawkins, Eric Dolphy, Otis Spann, Memphis Slim, Booker Little and many others.
The Candid dream came to a premature end in 1961 and its classic sessions were not to appear for a quarter of century. They were then acquired by Alan Bates London – based company, Black Lion Productions. Bates re-named his company, and gave re-birth to the CANDID name. Gradually the entire original CANDID line has been made available again on CD and new recordings for the label commenced in 1989.
Now, the catalogue comprises over 300 titles, including sessions recorded in the U.S.A. by the likes of Gary Bartz, Kenny Barron, Barry Harris, Donald Harrison, Dr. John, Lee Konitz, Clark Terry, Blue Mitchell, David Liebman, Hector Martignon, Gene DiNovi, Paquito d”Rivera, Claudio Roditi, Shorty Rogers, Mongo Santamaria, Shirley Scott and Bud Shank amongst others.
With jazz taking on an increasingly global aspect, CANDID widened its international scope and made a deep commitment to young up-and-coming artists at the cutting edge of Londons dynamic musical scene, gradually encompassing other worldwide talent.
Renowned for its success in developing Alex Wilson, Jamie Cullum, Stacey Kent , Clare Teal, Kyle Eastwood and French chanteuse, Mina Agossi along with the upcoming band Get the Blessing and young star vocalist Mishka Adams amongst others.
